We noticed the bird was unable to raise right wing. Upon review of radiograph, we saw abnormalities in the right shoulder.
The shoulder was completely locked, unable to lift.
|
2019-09-13 09:00 ces/me/des |
Bird is unable to fly or raise wing. Review of intake rad clearly shows a dislocated right shoulder. We missed it! Very sad situation as it may have been treatable at the time. Decided to euthanize as placement options are limited. Masked with ISO + pentobarb 1.5 ml IV Right shoulder has almost no ROM. Fx of right femur is nicely healed. Bird is in very good condition otherwise.

Surgery report |
Procedure - Fracture repair - femur | Performed by - des | Surgery time - 29 minutes | Lateral approach. Ends still very mobile but no bruising. Did
not find a nice dividing line between the iliotibialis lateralis
and iliofibularis so had to bluntly dissect thru. Found both
bone ends easily. The fracture was a short oblique with rough
ends. Overlap was substantial - at least 2 cm. Placed IM pin
from fracture and exited at hip. Removed distal trocar end, muscled
the ends back into alignment and drove distally. Alignment appeared
very good. Flushed wound and closed fascia and skin separately
with 4-0 vicyrl. Placed a cross pin distal and prox to fx. I
could not palpate the proximal end as I could not get digit far
enough up into groin to palpate. Originally planned on two cross
pins on each side but the femur is surprisingly short. Applied
BNP to pins and suture line. Covered suture line with tega. Bent
pins and created a sidebar with VTP.
Note: bird became bradycardic at the beginning. HR around 90
and dropping. A single dose of atropine 0.05 ml IM helped alot
and HR maintained pretty well for duration. |
