Surgery report |
Procedure - Fracture repair - tibiotarsus | Performed by - des | Surgery time - 35 minutes | My plan was to NOT use an external fixator since the bird is
very young and the fx is transverse. Against my better judgement,
I decided to try a normograde placement of the IM from the knee.
Not surprisingly, I was unable to align the ends to get the pin
into the distal fragment. So I had to start over. Left the IM
pin in place and plucked/prepped the medial aspect of the TBT
over the fx. Unable to part muscle bellies cleanly so I had to
bluntly dissect thru to expose the fx. There was quite a bit
of scarring and callus and it took a great deal effort to align
the ends. Drove IM pin across the fx. I caused a bit more soft
tissue trauma than I had hoped but I think it will be ok. Flushed
and clsoed muscle and skin separately. Applied BNP to the pin
and suture line. Covered both with tega. Bent the pin over laterally
so it can't migrate any further. Placed padding and vetwrap and
foam shoe.
Note: LEFT foot still looks very good so no foam.
Also note: had to keep bird very high (3.5 to 4%) during the
procedure but recovery was quick. |

BAR. Perched. but not weight bearing at all on right leg. Mostly NOLO? Lots of down feathers everywhere. Can palpate prox TBT fx. Had partially full crop.
Anesthetized with iso via mask then placed 3.0 mm ET tube Rad shows transvese fx of right TBT. Not present on rad 2 days ago. Placed padded splint with metal sidebars. Review of previous rad shows healing fx of distal RIGHT ulna. We did not notice this before. The aligment is good so I am not too worried.
Will need to palpate it tomorrow.
