Surgery report
Procedure - Fracture repair - femur
Performed by - des
Surgery time - 21 minutes
Lateral approach. Divided and dissected between the iliotibialis
cranialis and femortibialis externus cranially and iliotibialis
lateralis m. caudal/laterally. Had a very hard time finding the
distal bone end as it was fully embedded in the muscle. The proximal
 end was longer than the rad show but the fx had some small fragments
and oblique points. Flushed wound. Drove IM pin from fx and exited
at hip. Removed distal trocar tip, aligned the ends and drove
distally. Good stability from just the IM pin alone. Flushed
wound and closed in 2 layers with 4-0 vicryl. Drove cross pin
distal to fx. The proximal end was a bit short, had a clearly
oblique tip and the rad indicated that it was not a completely
bone column for much of its length. Decided against a proximal
cross pin. I think this should be enough. Applied BNP to suture
line and pins. Covered suture line with BNP. Bent the pins and
created a sidebar with VTP. Bird very stable under ANE but very
slow recovery. Took an extra 10 minutes before we could extubate.
