Flying very well. Soaring over 1/2 length of enclosure. Effortless. Very minimal lameness seen. Not when landing, just when turning. Probably would be okay to release at this point.

Weight: 1988 grams BAR. Flying well. Still favoring leg but looks alot better. Had a mid-air collision with one of the babies but no injuries
Anesthetized with iso via mask for rad. Rad shows siginificant lysis around pins. The callus seems a bit more prominent today. Placed 4.0 mm ET tube. Removed fixation. All pins VERY loose. Fx is very stable. Preened some of the covert feathers. Decided against splint. Seemed much more lame when returned. Will recheck later.

BAR. Flying well. Still lame but much improved. Fixation is clean and solid. Not chewing on vetwrap.
Anesthetized with iso via mask for rad. Rad shows some bridging, remodelling callus but still not nearly healed. No lysis around pins so decided to leave fixation in longer. All pins clean and dry. The distal pin on the medial side is a little grungy as the sidebar is touching the skin and there some dried debris around it. Cleaned all pins with betadine. Applied BNP to the distal/medial pin exit. Covered with vetwrap.
Will recheck in 2 weeks. Forgot to check keel!

Weight: 2000 grams Flying perch to perch and lands well with both legs but then favors left leg heavily. Not bearing full weight on left leg.
Anesthetized with iso via mask for radiograph. The rad actually appears less radiodense than 14 days. There is some lysis around the distal cross pin so we won't be able to keep the fixation in much longer. But there is also some mature bridging callus. Can palpate a boney callus over fracture site.
Pins clean and dry. Legs starting to refeather. Cleaned pin sites. Replaced vet wrap over fixation.

Weight: 1768 grams BAR. Perched. Bearing some weight but still very painful on left left. Shoe is intact but tattered and compressed so he must be using it at least a little.
Anesthetized with iso via mask for rad. Rad shows perfect alignment and nice bridging callus. The large fragment is still in displaced location but is incorporating into main fracture. Can definitely feel it on the lateral side under th skin. All pins dry but a bit dirty. Cleaned with betadine and recovered fixation with vetwrap.
Some lice - Sprayed with Bronco
Did not replace shoe.
MOVED TO: F4 Added 200 g cut-open rat.

Surgery report |
Procedure - Fracture repair - tibiotarsus | Performed by - des | Surgery time - 18 minutes | Placed 20 gauge IO catheter in right TBT. Bolus 20 ml LRS then
20 more during the procedure. Bird did very well during procedure.
Cleaned and debrided wound. Large fragment loose in the wound
but it was still partially attached. Placed IM pin from plateau
and drove in normograde fashion to the fracture. Removed trocar
tip, aligned the bone ends and drove distally. Placed a cross
pin prox and distal to the fracture. Used pretty large cross
pins so I think two will be enough. Flushed wound, placed fragment
back into place and closed the wound with 4-0 vicryl. Some tension
but I think the suture line will hold.
Set the rotation, bent the pins and created sidebars with VTP.
Applied BNP to suture line and pins. Covered suture line with
tega and covered fixation with vetwrap. Placed foam shoe. |
